Reality Show Vice
I have had a serious motivation problem as of late and have returned to my roots - killing innocent brain cells by watching hours of inane television. I highly recommend this less-than-noble pursuit. I have also discovered the beauty of taking the addiction off of the couch and onto the hard backed chair that sits in front of the PC to live these shows 24x7. Some personal favorites:
- Project Runway. I think Dixie does diary put this best when she reviews it thusly: "It combines four of my loves: weird fashion, snarky attitudes, melodrama and pretty pretty people." 'Nuff said. They have an infuriating website (to see the fashions, you have to click "Runway," to see the recap of the episode, you have to click "episode," to see "Tim's Take" you have to... well, you get the idea.) Nonetheless, this show could be on five times a day and I would watch it every time.
- Cheap Seats. Never has so noble an idea as Mystery Science Theater 3000 been so deliciously and deftly re-interpreted. The hosts are as good as the original Joel, Tom Servo, Crow, and crew, and the format of skits + mocking on screen commentary is ideally replicated. The biggest (and to me, best) difference is that while movies were a 2 hour affair, this baby is neatly wrapped up in 22 minutes. My MTV-generation-inspired attention issues thank you, cheap seats.
- What not to Wear. A serious favorite. I adore make-over shows - especially ones where I can simultaneously watch TV and people shopping. Talk about heaven. Bonus points for the fact that they frequently send people to Club Monaco. I gained new respect for the show when I found out that sometimes-oddly-dressed-but-always-fun-and-snarky Stacey London actually used to work for Vogue. I'm also a fan of the show that spawned the Stacey and Clinton hour - the BBC original WNTW.
- The Simpsons. I know - everyone either likes it or thinks it has jumped the shark, but I don't care. No one can ever accuse me of having liked popular television shows anyway. Besides, passe or not, no one has a better web presence. An archive, fan sites, a news source , a detailed map of springfield (this one blows me away - I could spend hours looking at it), and a personality test to figure out which character you most resemble.
- The Swan. We won't talk about this one. Only the anonimity of the web protects me while I admit the love I have for this train wreck of a show. Lucky for me, the show is in hiatus so there's no incriminating web site to point to. (sigh... that's never really true on the web.)
